What We are Learning...

Palm Beach County Teachers follow both the District Guidelines and National Common Core Standards along with Florida Sunshine State Standards and Benchmarks.

All teachers at Plumosa meet regularly with their team to plan together and discuss progression of students. In these meetings we unpack standards, discuss data from assessments, plan and prepare for upcoming units and arts integration activities, and search for new and different ways to enhance our teaching strategies and student achievement.  On display in each classroom are daily class goals for learning.   They are written as “I Can” statements that allow students to have a goal for today’s learning and take ownership of their own learning.

It is STRONGLY suggested that you check here once a week to see what your child is learning in school. You can then take the opportunity to further your child’s understanding of the content by referencing to it during the night, weekend, in the car, at the grocery store, in restaurants, etc. If you need any creative strategies to tie our curriculum into your home life please ask your child’s teacher for some ideas.

       ARTS

The Arts

Being that we are a School of the Arts we find new and creative ways to integrate the arts into our curriculum. We create, sing, dance, observe and perform throughout our day. Students also have 45 minutes of Fine Arts everyday          where they rotate Music, Dance, Art, P.E., Band, Piano, Media Center, Guidance, and Drama.

        LITERACY
We are currently beginning our Author and Illustrator Study on Children’s Author and Illustrator, Eric Carle.
Eric Carle’s themes go nicely with our Science Unit of Study as well. We are learning about his illustrations (tissue paper, and paint). Check out some Eric Carle books at your local library! In addition, we are continuing FAIR testing and Fontaus and Pinnel Running Reading Records. Your child should be on Level C by the end of Kindergarten. If they are not there yet, we still have a month. Practice, practice, practice reading at home!

          WRITING
In writing we are really learning to practice our neat Fundation’s handwriting. We are remembering to use our spaces, using an uppercase letter at the beginning of a sentence, using an ending mark at the end of our sentence. We are still writing the sounds we hear in words. We are also making sure that our sight words are spelled correctly. We are adding more details to both our writing and our illustrations. Please practice daily at home. Make sure they are including the Who, What, Where, When and Why. Details, details, details.
              MATH
We are beginning to start Chapter 11 of our GO MATH FLORIDA workbook. This chapter introduces Measurement -determining, comparing, and ordering lengths.
        SCIENCE
We are currently working on our Life Cycle Unit. How plants grow, butterflies, and how plants and animals help each other.
   SOCIAL STUDIES
In the month of May we will be learning about Memorial Day, as a way that American citizens take time to reflect on how our military helps and protects us.
