Purpose
Mobile devices are changing the world. Computers use to fill buildings the size of football fields to process millions of calculations. Today those computers can fit in people's hands. Everything is has shrunk and micronized devices into the smallest components which has revolutionized how people access information, communicate, and entertain. To see illustrations of how important these devices have become, walk down the street, through a mall, or through a school parking lot during dismissal to see this phenomena in action.
Technology has always appealed to the younger generations. It does not matter how small the device, the smaller the better. They gravitate to these devices and find new ways to use them to communicate, network, and entertain. These mobile devices have become part of their culture. Educators face many challenges but none more greater than changing how they educate these students.
This wiki will facilitate the learning process for educators to learn how to move from a non-technology or limited technology classroom environment to a engaging, dynamic learning environment with mobile devices. It will document the steps to how educators begin the steps of using these devices to reach academic standards, meet curriculum big ideas, handle logistics, develop management policies, and maintain appropriate useage of these devices.
Idea
This project will use a hybrid lab approach to use iPads and MacBooks. The cart will contain 22 iPads for the elementary classroom. They will be utilized for following areas:
- Student Productivity
- Digital Textbook
- Digital Literature/ Library Book
- Science Discovery/ Data Analysis
- Research
- Digital Content Development
- Current Events for Writing Purposes
- Other Educational Apps
The carts will contain ten MacBooks that will be used for digital content creation based on information from their iPads. Students will use these collaboratively to develop these projects that will be showcased on their classroom web sites, blogs, and other areas.
This wiki will serve as implementation, documentation, and publication of the process of rolling these out into the classrooms of Palm Beach County. The authors of this wiki will be using this research to develop a professional development curriculum to mentor other teachers in the implementation of how to create and implement a mobile learning environment.
